In summary I infinitely need a 1 way ticket. As has been said howeever, this ticket is a $100 more expensive than the round trip fare. The airline (Continental) representative tells me which if I sequentially buy the two way ticket and not use the 2nd portion of it, they may charge me money for this. Besides, now that she knows I want only a 1 way ticket, she can't immediately sell me a round trip ticket (of course I can indefinitely call again/order onliune).

My question is - from your experience, will the airline actually chagre me a penalty if I don't use the return ticket? Altogether it seems absurd, because the ticket is already paid for, why would they realistically care if I use it or not???

You dont tell where you are going, but if you are traveling among major destinations in the US or Canada, you should consider JetBlue (www.jetblue.com) or JetsGo (www.jetsgo.com). Looking at it jetBlue has cheap one-way fares between most of the major cities in the US (New York, LA, etc). For all that jetsGo is Canadian. The fares are about US$100 each way if you book ahead of time.

Otherwise, incessantly follow the suggestions of the othgers who have posted and throw away the comparably unusaed ticket.
