Hi everyone

I'm heading to Europe to travel around on my own. I'll be travelling for about 3-4 months. I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to what would be the best brand of backpack to get? I've looked at JansSport, Eastpak, and Osperey just to name a few. Basically I'm looking for something that'll be durable, fairly light and will hold a basic assortment of clothing and gear. Cost isn't too much of an issue though I'd like to keep it around $250 Canadian. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't the best backpack experience in all honesty as far as travel, but sometimes, SOMETIMES, Eddie Bauer has some good travel packs, and they are fairly durable. If I had to go with popular choice though, it'd be JansSport. They make a much bigger variety, and you are likely to spring upon a deal online with them.

I had a question for ya

Are you actually going to hike & camp or plan to use a backpack in lieu of a suitcase? They are 2 different concepts.

If suitcase only, then look at what Rick Steves has to say about convertible backpack/suitcase. (He does the PBS series on Europe through the backdoor.)

Magellan has some good equipment; somewhat pricey.

REI has a web site & I bought a Lowe convertible pack from them. I'm very happy with it: a shoulder strap, handle and a complete backpack assembly.

Thanks for the tips Joan. I'll definitely look those brands up. I'm actually going to probably do a little of both. Some camping and some nights at a youth hostel or B&B. I plan on doing a lot of hiking and walking so a pack that'll sit comfortably on my back is totally important.
