Going to the Cinque Terre in Italy in 2001. On a budget. Where do I stay, where do I eat? etc. Any advice, tips, help, hints will be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, for that area in Italy the Cinque Terre is somewhat pricey for accommodations and restaurants. We stayed just south of the Cinque Terre at the beach town of Marina di Massa. It was a short and beautiful boat ride to the Cinque Terre from MDM. We would spend the day exploring the different towns but skeep back at MDM. A local train can be taken to any of the five towns and which also goes to most towns just north and south of CT. We were on a budget so we stayed real close to the CT but not in it. It worked out well. Plus accommodations in the CT are often booked up. There are numerous towns just north and south of the CT that you might want to consider....unless you need to be right in the middle. We just showed up in Sept. and everything worked out. No reservations at all. Spontaneity made it much more fun!
