Anyone with hitchhiking experience in Jamaica? How hard is it to get a lift? How safe is it?

I myself am also inquiring about hitchhiking in Jamaica and have come up so far that it is much safer to go in a group. Literally everybody advises against trekking alone there - if wanting to escape the tourist filled locations. That's sad, isn't it?
