In four weeks I'll be visiting WestAfrica (Mauretanie, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso en Ghana) I would like to know if there are any ATM's in this region, or do I have to take cash money. Which currency would be best to take and change ($, ?)?

Thanks for your answer,

A few in Senegal, but I wouldn't be sore sure about the others. When I was there, each capital city had maybe one or two ATMs, and they only worked with the local bank, and were used about once a day by someone in a black Mercedes.

Euros will work well everywhere.

Ghana - ATMs are for sure in Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi. I had US dollars, the rate is the same everywhere (inlcluding airport), I've changed it once on black market also (in Kpandou) as I've run out of cedis but the rate was very unfavourable.

In Senegal you could get by with a VISA card in most towns (that's the card to bring to all these countries). There are lots of atms in and around Dakar, but even a town like Kaolack has one. In Mali you will find only one atm in the entire country. It's located in Bamako, at the Immeuble Nimagala. In Ghana you can find atms in most towns, and I even think you're able to find them at a atm locator at visa.com. In Burkina we found several atms in Ouaga.

In the francophone countries the currency to take now should be Euros, but you should have few problems with USD. In Ghana USD or Sterling.

Happy travels.
