Hi all.

I'm planning on going to Australia on a one year working holiday visa in the summer. I'm not exactly sure how long I plan to be there, if I'm lucky with the job front hopefully a year, if not then a few months anyway.

On the way from Scotland to Australia I'm planning on visit Bali for a week or two and then before landing up in Adelaide (I've got some relatives there) I'm planning on travelling by bus from Cairns to Adelaide, stopping off and staying at a few places along the way.

My question is whether I should take a suitcase or a backpack? Would the suitcase be a big burden on the initial part of the journey to Adelaide (Expected to last 4-5 weeks)? The only thing I am worrying about taking a backpack though is that I will need more clothes etc. for the rest of my time in Australia. I suppose I could pick up stuff along the way, but I just don't know!

Any views or experiences would be a great help as I've never done anything like this before.

Thanks,

I used to be a backpack-only traveller. Now, after some travel with my family, I've come to a new assessment of what I need on a trip. First of all, let me tell you what my family's ground rules are. First, we use backpacks as carry-ons and suitcases for checked luggage. Our suitcases (duffel bags, actually) have wheels but none of our backpacks do

My plan was to leave the suitcase at relatives in my departure city and carry on with a medium backpack.

One point - a suitcase signals to immigration that you are not a serious backpacker and they may think you are planning to hang around???!!!

If you use a BackPack, you may want to go to an Office Supply Store and purchase one of t hose small fold-away-luggage-carts,<very small> you can open it up and put your back pack on it and use the wheels, if not, fold it back up and bungie it to your pack.
