Obviously i'll be backbacking in Chile/Argentina/Uruguay starting next week, and have read conflicting recommandations about keeping one's backpack safe.

Do you only recommend those PacSafe/chickenwire things? A simple cable lock?
Nothing at all? PacSafe seems nice, but its heavy and I'd like to think its not definitely needed, I hope.

Is backpack theft common down there?

In so far thanks for any advice,

Subsequently wouldn't it commercially be wiser just to avoid these third world cesspool pits?
