I am thinking of going to Oz & NZ next year backpacking. I will be spending 6 or seven weeks in Asia first but then I have about 3 months down under.

Can anybody suggest a route or good general itinerary to get the best out of those two countries (taking in to account the times of the year). I'll probably get one of those backpacker coaches. If you do answer could you also suggest where to fly in and out of (probably getting a BA-Quantas ticket flying through Bangkok).

I am interested in seeing the sights, I would like to go hiking or tramping but not particulary if the weather is winterish. I should reach Aus start or middle of March.

I am not a big fan of water sports (being Irish and mid 30s I cannot swim), nor am I one to lie out on the beach (though I do enjoy the scenery and will snorkel in shallow water off the beach).

Thanks in advance

I don't think that I will have time to see all of Australia... I am still debating if I will have time to get to Ayer's Rock, or if I should just stick to the East Coast.

I am planning a three month trip as well, unfortunately, the only time I can go is between June and August. I am trying to figure out the best route as well, if I want to start in New Zealand, and then head to Australia, or do
Australia first, and then hit New Zealand.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks for both comments...

I will be going from June to August, so I shouldn't have to deal too much with sogginess (altho, I could be totally wrong).... I wasn't planning to spend much time in the cities, except to possibly base out of them a bit more, but I still have all that stuff to look into. So far I'm just trying to figure out my rough travel schedule. Once I do a bit more reading and such, then I'll do a bit more detail planning.
