I'm looking to plan my next road trip. I am especially looking for info regarding the cheapest way to go (with limited backtracking) since I will be driving and using the Ferry system. I have checked the guidebooks but this is pretty off-the-beaten path. I have hostel links for Canada independent hostels but nothing really up in that area of New Foundland. The rough outlines of the route are Vermont to Montreal , 40 and then 138 to Baie-Comeau, 389 to Labrador City and then 500 to Goose Bay. From there take the Ferry either up to Nain (is it worth it: price vs scenery, etc) or down to St. John's and then onto Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick. If anyone has done this, or the reverse or knows of any websites for ferry info, hostels or other cheap accommodations, and things to do sites for this route I would be much in your debt.

I looked into this for a recent trip and it seemed impractical except during summer months. Check: http://www.gov.nf.ca/tourism/ I can't remember where I found the ferry info, but I recall that outside of summer the only hope is milk runs that stop everywhere and take a week or more.

For the ferries to/from NS: http://www.marine-atlantic.ca/marinee/wheel/index.htm

Allow three weeks to see Nfld island. It's a big place and all very worthwhile, IMHO.

I intend to post a trip report shortly.

Definitely! I love Newfoundland, especially the West coast where I saw wonderful campgrounds.

We took the ferry across the Straight of Belle Isle and drove south to the end of the road in Quebec (wonderful scenery) then north to the end of the road in Mary's Harbour. The road is going to be continued north, no connection with Goosebay planned. I don't think that there is a bus doing this route, but I am not sure.

One important thing: that part of Labrador is wonderful, but it has black flies!!! Their bite is worse than mosquito bites! I don't think that camping will be much fun. We stayed in a motel and were happy to have windy days when the tiny beasts were blown away.

A ferry trip up the Labrador coast is still on my wish list. I saw a report on tv where someone had taken a ferry from Montreal or Quebec City along the Quebec coast. One Labrador ferry departs in Lewisporte, Newfoundland. Another ferry chugs along the south coast of Newfoundland which has incredible scenery.

Did I mention that Newfies are great people?
