am going backpacking in australia for a year next jan and would love to hear about any places recommended as must see places to visit for me and my girlfriend. we both intend to backpack, are quite active, but have a relatively limited budget.

Just make sure you come to the south west of Western Australia. It's the best - but then, I'm biased! Suggest you ask more specific questions about Australia on rec.travel.australia+nz That newsgroup is much busier than this one and is specifically for Oz + NZ.
