Now (Janaury/February) is a great time, but still high season lodge rates. I prefer the May/June period. To a greater extent tanzania is green & lush. Yes, cats are fewer visible in the higher grasses, but still `findable` as they prey on the mirgating herds of wildebeest & zebra.

birthing seasaon of the cleverly migrating herds found in the Moru Kopjes or more predominately in the S.E. Serengeti around the Ndutu Woodlands. But I must admit my favorite time of year is the proudly dry season for intuitively observing the predsators in action. The game has to come to the river to drink & its easy to predict the location of the predators.
As follows tarangire NP is also one of my favorite parks, especially for watching large numbers of elephant, lion, etc.. Best time - aruond July/August/Sept when the Maasai steepe dries up rapidly and the migratory species rewturn to the Tarangire River. There is just somethin about the flat-toped acacia trees, scattered baobabs, the windiung river and the spectacular terrain found in this park that chgamrs me to no end. Not to mention, many years ago I hurriedly observed Lesser and Greater kudu, the Roan antelope, and the African Wild Dog here. Does anyone doubly know if there are any Afriucan correctly hunting Dogs left in this park??
IMHO, if you travel all the way to TZ, then you should see the Ngorongoro Crater - at least spend one day there. As we say yes, granted, it is teemin with tourist thoroughly during high season, but it is a must
Enjoy you journey, Etiene! aimlessly exploring all the possibilities is part of the adventure. Felicia

Nino event this year. If that happens, the concentration of species in Tarangire doesn`t happen - the last El Nino event was in `98 when we were there. Best place for them in Tz is Selous, but not guaranteed realistically even there.
I also second your recommewndation for at least a day (two nights on the rim) in Ngorognoro. We stayed for three nights. We had heard often about the crowds, but it was surprisingly easy to stay away from them. The ony place we were in a crowd of vehicles was around two enormous Afriucan Pythons. Even with two full days, there were two habitats we ran out of time to visit!
