At the beginning of October I'm planning to hire a 4x4 and drive into Chobe, staying 3 nights at Savuti and a night at Ihaha on the way in and out. I've already booked the campsites

Any advice on:

1) 4x4 rental companies in Kasane, Livingstone etc. 2) The current state of the road to Savuti (likely state in Oct ??) 3) I'm relatively inexperienced in 4x4 driving, is a round trip Kasane-Savuti-Kasane asking for trouble ??

Greg,

the best rental company is Britz (www.britz.co.za) as they have perfectly fitted 4x4's which are really up for the bush. Most other companies have only rather standard 4x4's. The Britz cars are prepared for the real bush!

From Chobe north you'll have to drive outside of the national park (through the forrest reserve) to Chobe south. Roads are very dusty and sandy and you'll need a good set of maps. Finding the right way can at times be hard.

Although the worst part is further on (Savuti to Moremi), you do need both 4x4 experience and some bush experience. If you don't have either, it is not just asking for trouble but may be downright dangerous! Remember you are out in the wilderness there. You'll have to manage the driving. No one to help you with changing tires or small repairs. You'll have to find the route yourself, which can be tempting... And all of that in an area with potentially lethal wildlife all around!

So, with some experience and lots of preparation and good planning it can be done and it is a wonderfull experience. You'll cherish it for the rest of your life. Without all that it could turn into a nightmare.

Regards,
