Hi Jim, I'll let you in on one of my fav spots. Just west of Lee Vining, along 120 (the road to Tioga Pass) are some excellent campgrounds. I usually stay at Aspen myself. Directions are to head west on 120, and just before you start to climb the pass, there will be a left turn. I want to say the name is (something) Powerhouse Rd. Turn left onto it, and when it T's turn right. Follow it up into the canyon. The campground is on your left. The nice thing about this spot is that there are a lot of lakes within easy drives, also great hiking. Plus, town is relatively close in case you want a dinner you don't cook yourself. Another possibility (and perhaps nicer) would be camping at Lundy Lake. Has a lake there, and some beaver dams further up the canyons, with a short hike, that folks fish. Hope this helps.
