Can anyone suggest a packback that is just small enough for carry-on on most international flights?

I'm thinking around a 40l, and an alpine weekender pack would be OK. My main use for the pack after Thailand will probably be for skiing so a more technical pack is no problem.

depends where you are located to what brands are readily available.. around here in australia, macpac have some quite nice 40L size packs... if you're in North America.. north face have a large range I guess - not sure on that though ....check out the manufacturer websites for ideas, or even the local stores websites if they have them

basically, i think that the most important thing in getting a pack is to 'try on' as many as possible with some weight in [a tent or two] and find out which has the most comfortable harness for you... aside from the comfort.. when i bought my first pack, i looked at what other people had recommended, but they were just so uncomfortable in comparison to what i ended up buying.... fyi, i ended up getting a wilderness equipment pack, but i don't think they make anything smaller than 50L.. again.. i'm not sure though, hah
