My wife and I are planning on spending 6 weeks in China (backpacking) and thinking about using the trains primarily to get around from place to place.

It looks like we'll be coming into China from Hanoi, Vietnam, traveling to Xian. After spending some time there, we'll head to Beijing and then on to Shanghai (where we'll fly out of China).

1. Would anyone recommend that much travel by train? (and if so, which class?) If not, what mode of transportation would you suggest for travel between these cities?

2. We're having a hard time finding current rates from these trips. Any suggestions as to where to find this info?

Thanks in advance for your help.

1. There are few options traveling through China. For long-distance travel, either risk your life on intra-China planes or bear and grin through the slow and disgusting trains. For the train, there are four classes: hard seat, soft seat, hard sleeper, soft sleeper. Anything longer than two hours, forget the hard seat, no matter how cheap it is. Two to eight hours, soft seat. For trips from Xian to Beijing to Shanghai, I would recommend the soft sleeper which is close to a second class EuroStar Train. For the major cities, direct trains are the way to go. Otherwise, you can be in for a multiple day train ride.

2. I don't know if you can pre-purchase your tickets. Try local travel agents to see. If you need to buy it there, then there are usually two ticket offices, one for soft sleeper and then the rest. The soft sleeper is their version of club access at the airport. The other is like a mosh pit at a punk concert.

In general, the systems over there don't work that well, so planning ahead is very difficult. Best of luck. You'll have a great time.
