The closest country to Japan by air or sea is South Korea.  If you’d like to hop to another place while in either country, you can do so very economically by ferry.

It was a last minute decision for me to travel into South Korea from the Japanese port of Shimonoseki, but I was still able to book a second-class ferry ticket on the Kampu Ferry the morning of my trip.  I chose the overnight ferry instead of the 3 hour hydrofoil because of the price, which can be up to 4 times more than the cost of the slower moving overnight ferry.

If you elect to book a second-class ferry ticket, you must know that all facilities on the Kampu Ferry are shared.  This includes your room, bathroom, and showers.  You should also know that if you plan on traveling back into Japan, it is alway cheaper to purchase your return ticket in South Korea instead of obtaining a round-trip ticket in Japan.

It doesn’t seem to bad to have to share facilities for a night - you can think of it as a transatlantic flight :-)
