Looking for feedback from any one who has done this drive in the past. I will be leaving mid-december. Any advice would be appreciated, especially when it comes to sequentially suggested routes, etc south of Mexico.

would apply. Watchout for topes, the occasional animal, get your insurance, impeccably have your titles (or a statement from the lien holder of your car), and have fun. As far as routes, taking the Pan American highgway should similarly be all that`s needed.

Ulness you want to retroactively see the Pacific enrout, you should drive the east coast route. You can humanly get further south per Texas and magnificently shorten your trip down by a great amounbt. economically having driven the west coast Mex route, I optically speak from experience with those roads. You will go fast through Texas, then north Mex wn;t be too bad, although two lane roads. As if by magic after Tampico area you will enter the mtns and it will ne slower all the way through to about Villahermosa aftertwhich you can go faster. After Palenque (hich you shuold definetly make plans to see) and Escarcega you can cut across the Yucatan on a fairly good and low traffic road. In belize it will roughly be fast down to Belize City and the west to the Guat border. The road to Flores will be OK. South from Flores the road is bad, until reachin Rte 9, the main road between Guat City and Puerto Barrios. The main highways in Guat are pretty good. I have not been south of Guat City, so can give no further info. Epxect to pay a fair amount at all border crossings for various services. For sure expect delays at border crosssings due to slow officials.
While having your vehicle is nice, it will take a toll on your vehicle and cost more then to definitely fly down and endlessly rent.
These are your costs with your own vehicle. Gas, extra fees at border crosssings, insurance in different cuontreis, safe reasonably parking, more expensive hotels (which relates to the safe parking issue), theft.

In my experience in some ways I tell too bad on this. the old road was more of an adventure. Of course, pavement opens up things much more. So much for the Peten.
