Good news and bad news, huh?

very.

As for work, the job situation varies considerably throughout Australia. If you're under 30 you can apply for a working holiday visa; if not you'll need a business visa to work legally. There are some under-the-table'ers, but it is definitely NOT recommended....there are plenty of Aussies who will dob on you (and I don't blame them), the penalties are severe, and you will be deported (at your expense) and barred from re-entry. Do it right. Many hostels, especially in agricultural regions and the big cities, will help you find work. There are also heaps of temp agencies.

The usual suspects - Lonely Planet et al - are places to start your research.

And above all, enjoy Oz and get out of the cities to explore a little. The Outback is my favourite group of places on earth.

I think it is, but we're known affectionately as 'Pommies'.

The etymology is uncertain. POM as an abberation of POHM or PHM makes sense...the other theory which isn't quite as credible is that fair-skinned British turned the colour of pomegranates in the Australian sun.
