Howdy, I'm wondering about the possibilities of hitchhiking in foreign countries. How universal is the raised thumb to signify that you're looking for a ride? Do people commonly hitchhike in all places, or are there some cultures where this simply isn't done?

Thanks in advance,

In Israel it's the sign road hookers make. The proper gesture is pointing an outstretched hand down. Rest of Europe recognizes the classic thumb, no problem. Germany, France, easy hitchhiking. Gets harder in (some parts of) Sweden.
