I'm traveling for about a year in Latin America soon. I've backpacked europe and always stayed in hostels as I plan on doing in Latin America. My question is this: Are those International Hostel Cards worth the $25 membership fee? Will I actaully save some money? And more specifically since I have your attention, has anyone used one in Costa Rica or Peru that you might be able to recccomend a specific hostel that you enjoyed or that discounted your rate b/c of the card? Thnks for your attention

Yes its worth having one, though many hostels will book you no matter if you have a card or not. The thing is some will do it while adding a dollar or 2 to the cost. But many won't mind harboring a tourist in their hostels without the card.
On the other hand, you can also just wing it, and do the stamp thing. That's where you pay about 3 bucks extra to stay in whatever hostel charges you, and after about 3 stamps ($9) you earn your IHC. Check out the site for more exact rules on that (think it's hostels.com?).
However put, it's a worthy investment because it insures THE best deal in ALL hostels worldwide. That $25 membership can save you $2 everytime you stay in a hostel. Since you'll be hosteling a year, it's surely a worthy purchase.
