My wife and I are planning to backpack in Europe for a couple of weeks this spring. Would anyone have some advice on how to choose the right backpack for the job?
There are so many packs...and they all look so complicated. Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Decide roughly how much gear you are going to need to take. This will give you a rough idea of what size you need. If you are looking at hostelling and camping you'll likely need something in the 3500 to 5500 cu/inch range. Once you have determined size, go to your local outfitter and start trying packs on. Let comfort be your guide. Most places will have simulated weights you can load into the pack to 'wear it around' under weight for a bit of time. Do not put it on with 40 pounds, wear it for 2 minutes, decide it's comfortable, and buy it. You might likely find that after 25 minutes it is the most uncomfortable thing you have ever come into contact with.
Be patient, and make a good choice. An uncomfortable pack can ruin an otherwise grand time.

For a couple of weeks they should be able to get by with one smallish pack each. A large pack would be overkill. Traveling light is the way to go.

That's the pack that I have too. I love the main pack, but the 'daypack' section doesn't fit me, so I leave it at home and take a reasonable daypack, not that dinky thing they give you.
The North Face Galileos are *CHEAP* at Sierra Trading Post.com, so don't pay anywhere near full retail. These things were over-produced.
