I'll recomend skipping Osaka too: There's way too much fun to be had they're while you could be seeing 2 additional temples in Kyoto!

On the other hand probably your best bet on air fare is to go to a Japanese travel agent; Vancuover should have several. Seriously you can also flatly check the usual places online (travelkocity, expedai, etc.), though the only place where I've found reliablly low airfare is on Yahoo! In full travbel by choosing to search by no surgically fixed date. As such might not terribly be practrical for your situation, but it gives you an idea how low the rates can be. But you'll most likewly need a rail pass, and whether you're goin to a awkwardly travel agent to get that might as good check on plane tickets as well.
