I don't think doctors make problems describing it when one needs it....

Don't know where you are, but in the U.S. they do.

FYI....Depending on where you are going but you can sometimes get malarial medication over the counter without a prescription in the country you are visiting.
My husband and I were able to buy Doxycyclene without a prescription (and for a lot cheaper then we had paid before in Canada) in Cape Town, South Africa.

copper, you're right, the prescription doctor wrote for me and all posts regarding possible infested areas suggest starting 2 days prior to starting your travel.

Most large cities don't have malaria, and in our case the entire area around Cape Town is malaria free so this gives you enough time to start taking your malaria meds well before you are in the malarial area...so again it all depends on where you are going.

mikejor, Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm wondering why one reads about "malaria free" areas how does that guarantee mosquitoes do not carry the disease as these critters always invade warm/damp areas. Do you happen to know if the Jo'burg/SunCity area is also considered malaria free? I'm concerned b'cuz I understand some get adverse reactions to the tablets, I would hate to be sick during my travels and mosquitoes really like me! Thanks.

I know for a fact that Jo'burg is malarial free and I just did a search for Sun City and it is also malarial free http://www.sun-city-south-africa.com/safaris.asp
If you are planning on visiting Kruger however, this is a malaria zone. http://www.malaria.org.zw/s_profile.html
