Why are people in the US so surprised to hear that someone would like to meet other cultures ?

The travel bulletin boards appear to be dominated by writers from the United States who travel extensively. Doesn't this indicate that 'people in the US' are actually eager to visit, meet and learn about other cultures? As one who has traveled fairly extensively, my impression is that people here are extremely interested; they're not at all surprised 'that someone would like to meet other cultures.'
