NYC Events Accommodation - January

Hi just wondering if there are any cool events/concerts happening in NYC in January as I'll be travelling there with a friend. I know it's cold, but surely there must be something fun to do!

Also, we are looking for some cheap, safe, convenient accommodation.. possibly a hostel. Any ideas?
