Hi,

I plan to take a train from Paris to Bayeux where the D-Day beaches are located. (one day trip)

I would like to get some suggestions regarding taking a tour versus visiting the sites on my own.

Thank you.

I assume you are American and, given your time constraint, will want to visit the US beaches as opposed to the British/Canadian beaches.

You can certainly visit the sites by yourself (you will want to spend at least 2 hours at Omaha, especially if you are going to walk down the beach on the track that the US troops came up. ) There are also some first - rate was museums in the area.

The problem is getting from beach to beach and place to place if you don't have a car. For what it's worth, I would look for a tour that starts in Normandy

A few years ago we visited Bayeaux and the beaches. We caught a small tour bus by the tourist information centre. The young French woman driving the bus was very congenial and fortunatley for us, spoke excellent English. In her comments she seemed to genuinely appreciate the sacraftices made by the allied coalition of young people, so many of whom are buried there. She allowed us ample time at Omaha beach and we also visited the Canadian and British areas, along with a museum which was very informative. This all took place during a comfortable day in June. The next day we saw the Bayeaux Tapestry (actually an embroidery) - an unbelievable work of art from around the 1070's. It is well protected and excellently presented. I still can't believe that a textile from that long ago lives on in such good condition.

Have a grand experience,

Take a taxi! They are usually at the Bayeux train station and have fixed prices which depend on what you see, and how long your tour will last. Try a search with the words 'Bayeux taxi.'

You've come to the right place to ask. A mini bus tour including Utah beach - St mère eglise - point du hoc - Omaha - Arromanche is 70€ lasting from 8:30 to 18h. Not easy to get there on a train for that time. I beleive the first train arrives at 9:20 You do an afternoon trip Arromanche - Longues guin battery American cemetery Omaha beach for 35€.

There are two mini bus tours operating from Bayeux 'Bus Fly' and another. I quote Bus fly as I sometimes work for them if they are overstretched.

I don't knox the tarif for a taxi for a day. I think it must be quite steep.

I can quote my tarif for the day at 240€. Driving included.
