Hi Everyone,
A friend of mine (A British citizen) wishes to travel/tour the West coast USA and hopefully do some kind of casual work while there, to help fund his undetermined length of stay.
Unfortunately he doesn't know anyone who has done something like this, who could advise him.
Can anyone tell me of any *good* online travel forums/chat rooms which he could dip into and talk to others who have done this sort of thing? Also, If anyone knows of any good websites that offers help and/or advice to this type of 'casual' traveller then please let me know.
My apologies if i have posted to the wrong NG.

People with visitor's visas cannot legally work in the U.S. The person would have to find some kind of 'off the books' job, which are not advertised. I would not count on financing a trip in this manner. He may or may not be able to find something, but it would be very risky to arrive with no funds to sustain him.

It would also be very risky, especially in the New World Order, to attempt to work illegally - it is grounds for deportation and prohibition against re-entry, and is one basis upon which numerous people have been rounded up lately (immigration violations) while the feds attempt to build cases on other (i.e. terroristic) matters.
Even if you don't want to go to the US again after the 'working holiday' trip, you will often need to transit through the US en route to somewhere, and will not be able to. You'll also find yourself on just about every immigration computer on the planet. Don't risk it.

Thankyou Rita and Raffi, For your responses. You have both made very good points.
My friend would like to travel and work legally in the U.S and is currently working like a man possesed to save for his trip and does not intend to arrive without funds. He just would like to know if he could do some paid work to extend his stay, a sort of 'working holiday'.
Ideally , he would like to set up employment before he left the UK. Are there agencies that could offer him work before he leaves this side of the pond?
If say, he is unable to obtain employment before leaving the UK and was offered work during his stay, could he change the status of his visa to the required one for employment?
He desperately would like to hear from others who have experience of 'working holidays' in the U.S and pick-up some tips and advice.

No, because I believe that an open forum calls for an open exchange of opinions...not for being told what my 'place' is, or isn't (however inaccurately in the context).
May I introduce you to your own first amendment??

Jonah whomever's proposition was that advising a Briton seeking to work in the US not to do so without a permit, because of the severe consequences of being caught, was 'sticking my nose where it didn't belong.' Since he was talking about US rules, it would only make sense to compare apples and apples....
As for his comment, what was it Trudeau said about being called worse things by better people....
