Hi,

I am going to apply for a Schengen visa from the French consulate in Boston and was reading their checklist of documents required. It seems that they need proof of travel insurance for the entire duration of the trip. However, I recall that when a couple of my friends applied for their visas last year for a similar trip, they did not get any and had no problems in getting their visas. So I have a couple of questions:

1) Is it worth the trouble to try and apply for a visa without travel insurance? How particular are the embassies about your having travel insurnace?

2) If I do get travel insurance (and I know I probabloy should), could anybody recommend a good travel insurance agency in the US? I am looking for something basic and cheap. I am travelling from mid May for about 5 weeks.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks and regards,

I usually use TravelGuard, they are on the net, and they have a super-saver plan that is not terribly expensive. You probably only need to insure for the value of your airline tickets or non-refundable expenses.

I think you'll find its not for the tickets but for health care - you dont get left on the street in EU - you get the health care and they want to know that the state system has got someone to recover it from.

TravelGuard includes health care in its policy, but the size of the policy is variable. You need to pick an amount to insure related to the cost of your trip, and the health care comes along for the ride as it were.

Also, I think that IYH has a health insurance that is available cheap if you are a member. Might be worth becoming a member of Hostelling INternational just for the access to insurance.

In that case, be very, VERY sure that your medical insurance covers you world-wide! Many Americans don't bother to check, and if they are suddenly taken ill receive a very rude (and expensive) surprise. (Medicare, for instance, does NOT cover Americans overseas - consequently, most Medicare 'supplemental' policies do not, either.)
