hey backpackers! still haven't found anyone brave enough to go with me deep into the jungles of costa rica, but have found the perfect place for a basecamp near corcovado national park in southern costa rica. it is called "Bolita", invented by two Canadians, and is about a 30-minute walk acoss a river and two creeks into a private farm in the forest reserve bordering the park. though this "hostel" is off the beaten path, it is about half the price of other hostels and it has some amenities others do not, such as eco-friendly solar lighting, gravity water systems with solar hot water showers, full-flush toilets, full kitchen, mosquito nets and the most charming setting near the primary forests of corcovado, all without the less charming diesel emissions and hub-bub of the tourist centers. i have been able to use Bolita as a base for all my "back door" travel into this amazing paradise. it has no website or accessable phone number yet, but can be easily located through the Oro Verde Hotel in Puerto Jimenez, on the Osa Peninsula of southern costa rica. The people who run Oro Verde often take nature tours to this paradise called Bolita. Bolita is located above Dos Brazos, a tiny old mountain mining town about 14 km north of Puerto Jimenez. fortunately, this area, as well as much of the country surrounding corcovado park, has converted from mining and logging to eco-tourism in the last few years. the best thing about this place is the lack of long lines of tourists typically trampling the trails of the pacific coastal entrances of the park. amazing animals and plants abound on this quiet side of the undeveloped eastern access to Corcovado Park, some of the last and best examples of primary rainforest left in central america! check it out by calling Oro Verde Hotel in Puerto Jimenez, C.R. at 735-5241 and speak to Josh or Jeyns. happy travels!
