On the History Channel at 8 tonight and again at 12 they are showing on the This Week in History series The Dangers of the American Wild; Wilderness Survival. Thought that those who would be interisted would like to know.

great show>>> little bit of history (lewis and clark exp.) and a few good survival technics that would come in handy in any type of survival situation (food procurment, h2o gathering, fire starting etc...) on again saturday. going to tape it for my son to watch (he's a scout ready for wilderness survival merit badge) very informative.

Wilderness survival isn't all that hard. Just walk downhill until you find an RV park.

Been following this thread with interest.

I am a seventy year old American Indian and a lifelong avid primitive camper. I personally see the inner cities as the only wilderness!

Not in any way trying to provoke anyone, but folks should really consider living in or merging with the unspoiled places rather than having the mindset of 'surviving in the wilderness'.

The land set aside and protected by the government and designated as wilderness are to be cherished and savored.

The word survival to me means ' I prevailed in spite of mother nature'. Or I won out over nature.

Just a thought.

That's hard to do when you live in a city 50 weeks a year. 'Merging' takes more experience than one can gain in a few weeks a year of hiking or learn from any amount of book-learning. And I fear those of us who have lived in cities all of our lives, however much we may love the outdoors, have become much too accustomed to a fast hectic pace ever to slow down for long.

It's nice to pretend for a few weeks a year, though.

Absolutely. Also I suggest we not tell the other city dwellers it's out there.

To us city dwellers, 'survival' means nothing more than staying alive if we get lost in an unfamiliar environment. And when we say we've conquered mountains, what we really mean is that we've conquered our own limitations.

And a good one. Thanks for it. I've been alone in the city : never felt that in the bush by myself.
